the kindness of neighbours

On Wednesday I sent our 5yr old up the road (in his pj's - we were all sick) to give some yeast to our nice German neighbour.  She knew the kids were home sick and so sent him back with a cool kiddy documentary type DVD about the NASA space programme.  The boys were especially impressed with the zero gravity food play that went on.  When he returned the DVD later that day (still in his pj's) he came back with three delicious hot pretzels which we ate for afternoon tea. They were amazing.  I've made bread before but never with that yummy European style crustiness on the outside.  So in the wee hours of this morning (around 5am) I thought now that I'm up (with the sick 4yr old), I may as well pop some dough into the bread maker and give it a try.  Sadly my electronic scales are not working properly and so I guessed the amount of flour.  Not a good idea... I think I put in about seven cups and it needed five.  We still made them but next time maybe they'll be worth blogging about.

That is very neighbourly - looks yummy, good winter food. Hope they helped chase away the bugs and you're all feeling better. Cold and wet here today same predicted tomorrow.

Mmmmm, I know they are GOOOOOOD because I got to have one for my breakfast! thankyou... yum! You may have put in some extra flour (??) but as far as I'm cincerned it was DELICIOUS. And baked at 5.30am??? too good, you.
The kids loved the cookies - Josh said DELICIOUS! So I must get that recipe.

Hope you enjoyed the DVDs :)

Actually Simone you got the second batch... with the right amount of flour :o) yes I know I'm crazy doing stuff like that so early but with all the crying and coming and going to the bathroom (from both kids) there was no way I was getting back to sleep!
