my first pocket knife
While our boys aren't exactly "free range" kids in the sense that I let them roam the neighbourhood unsupervised, I do encourage them to climb trees (and sometimes fall out), and to try some things that might freak out a more cautious parent. For his recent 6th birthday our school boy got his first pocket knife from NanaRobyn and Grandpa. It's beautifully engraved with his name on one side. The main blade has a rounded tip and a lock so that it won't accidentally flick back in on itself. It also has a philips screwdriver, a saw and a nail file (I think). Anyway it's pretty cool (he'd say it's "mean as") and although he does get to use it, for now we're looking after it inbetween outings. Mainly to keep our four year olds hands off it.
