little hobbits

Don't these grubby feet just remind you of little hobbits feet?  Had an awesome day today with Nana and Poppa (the last weekend before they return to Christchurch for good, sob sob).  The day ended with us all tired and happy after many adventures and games of Billy Goats Gruff and a drink at the Puhoi pub.

I said the boys could have a lemonade and #2 was adamant he didn't want one, however he did want a "can drink".  So he got a can of sprite (lemonade) and everyone was happy.  They pretty much never get fizzy drink so it was a big novelty, #1 drank about half of his and then said he didn't feel too good.
I'll have to do a separate post about the Art of Cheese cafe where we had morning tea.  It's such a cool kid friendly place.  I took lots of photos.

Thanks to all of you who have left comments lately, usually it's just Grandpa and Simone so it's been lovely.

just before dusk

I love reading other people's blogs and getting inspired to try something new or do something differently.  This morning I had no kids about and spent a lot of time reading online.  A post at sew liberated  (about kids and nature) caught my eye and I checked out some of her links.  There is lots of good stuff about children being outdoors.  I think it's something I struggle with a bit as our outdoor space is quite small and not easily accessible (none of that indoor outdoor flow going on).  In an effort to get outside late this afternoon, the youngest one and I got stuck in raking up some leaves and sweeping the path.  Mr bookworm (who had been inside reading a new library book) soon donned his gumboots and joined us.  Within a short time they were up the tree playing a game of pirates.  Jumping down into the big pile of leaves was fun too.  When it was time to make dinner they didn't want to come in, head torches were requested!  It felt really good to get outside, we really need to do it more (if you've ever seen our garden you'd agree!).  We walk to school and kindy all the time but just mucking about is really nice.

dinosaur ice fossils

A wee holiday project, lots of fun but it did end in tears.  We froze some plastic dinosaurs (we have quite a lot of them) in some water with food colouring.

Then we took a meat mallet (B made it as a kid in metalwork) and pestle (so each boy had something heavy) and smashed the ice to bits.  That was the best bit.  Got out a bit of aggression I think too.  A couple of the dinosaurs sustained injuries which led to the tears, especially when one of the broken legs got dropped between cracks in the deck so we couldn't play dino vets.

butterfly creek

I accompanied the little guy on a kindy trip to Butterfly Creek recently.  It really is a cool place to visit.  Not so close to home that we'd want to get a year pass or anything, but pretty fun.  There are some new additions since the last time I visited, most obviously being the crocodiles.

They have a wee train, a farm yard where you can visit and pat the animals, crocodiles and of course masses of butterflies in the very humid butterfly house.

I'm so conscious that there's only three more terms till he starts school.  It's hard to comprehend that I won't have any preschoolers at home anymore.  Weird.

I'm making the most of the wee bits of time that we get to play and giggle and skip and dance and explore the neighborhood together.  Stopping to collect acorns and leaves and look at bugs.  It's going a little bit too fast.

cook pot cook

We found this great book at the library recently and I thought I'd share it here in case you want to get it out too.  It's called "Fairy Tale Feasts" and has lots of stories and recipes.  I love fairy tales and these ones are nice and short which is extra good when you're feeling lazy (like I often am when it's story time).  We read the magic pot of porridge story and #2 took great delight the next morning, in telling our pot "cook pot cook" and "stop pot stop".  We've also made runaway pancakes after reading the story quite similar to the gingerbread man.

it looks like christmas lights!

The little guy was taking out the rubbish the other morning (such a good helper) and yelled for me to come and see.  He was so excited and exclaimed "it looks like christmas lights mummy!"  He was looking at the rain drops on the rosemary bush and it did look very pretty.  I wouldn't have stopped to look at it though if he hadn't told me to.  I love that my boys notice things that I don't, I always seem so busy, so rushed.  A couple of weeks ago I was in such a hurry that I dropped hot melted honey onto the floor and it splashed up burning my face and chin.  I was very lucky that it didn't get in my eyes.  I was in a lot of pain for a couple of days but luckily no lasting scars, think maybe the universe was telling me to slow down a little.

saucy

I let the school boy make his own sandwich today... as you can see he quite likes tomato sauce!  Think he was excited to get free rein... I did make him scoop most of it off again though.

i'm gonna punch you

Sitting at the downstairs computer right now I can hear a battle going on the back garden.  I'm choosing not to get involved.  Lots of yelling...
"hey!!!  ouch!!  now I'm gonna punch you twice"
"hands down or I'm not gonna be your friend"

5 seconds later... they're laughing and giggling and chucking the water ball at each other.  I now have two wet and kinda tired kids to get into the bath before dinner.

autumn at last

The weather today was cool, but not cold, and overcast, but not raining, just how I like it.  NanaD, Poppa, the boys and I had a fun time in the Domain this morning, playing hide and seek and taking some photos.  I may or may not blog them for a while.  Too much work on this week and it's the school holidays!  But here's a cute acorn from our morning.

is it a work day for daddy today?

At ten past six this morning (grrr daylight savings!) this little guy asked me "is it a work day for daddy today?"
"Yes it is" I answered.
"but I wanted to go fishing with daddy today" he blinked back the tears.
I cuddled him and whispered to him that Poppa is taking him to a movie today and that cheered him up just a little bit.  I know he'd rather go fishing though.  B took both boys out fishing on Friday after their friend's birthday party, just Mr4 on Saturday, and went grown up fishing yesterday with his mates. They both love it, what more can I say?

happy easter

We had a lovely Sunday at our place.  Actually I spent much of it in bed with my nasty cold and it made a huge difference (much better today).  I'd spent the previous three days feeling wretched but not being able to do anything about it.  So a day of resting and chocolate and family meals was great.  I cooked the boiled eggs for breakfast, Mum and Dad came with sandwiches and hot cross buns for lunch, and B cooked a magnificent roast for dinner which we shared with Auntie Anna and Chante.  Yummo.

We found some lovely dairy free eggs at Huckleberry Farm filled with dark chocolate bunnies.  Such a thrill I can tell you.  I think there was a bit too much chocolate though, complaints of a sore tummy were heard from the littlest one.

yo gabba gabba craft

Okay the beanbags aren't quite as good looking as they could be, but it's the thought that counts right?  We had some sheets of (pretty rubbishy) iron on transfer paper and I printed some Yo Gabba Gabba guys on to it for #2s birthday party.  Never quite got around to making them into anything so today they became beanbags with a bit of an old flannel cot sheet.

The boys enjoyed helping me fill them with rice (B took the photos) and sewing them on the machine.  They always love the sewing part.  They've played games with them most of the day, throwing in a bucket, balancing them on their heads, sliding them along the hall.  They look pretty cracked and wrinkled now but that's just the bad transfer paper.  The wee guy has even taken a couple of them to bed.

camping accessories

Just a little bit of crafting I did the other week.  I made a bag for our camping cutlery which had been rattling about.  I ironed some interfacing onto the red fabric, drew a knife and fork, cut them out and zig zagged around them, who knew it'd be that easy?  I find that sewing helps keep me sane!  I think that it's the fact that I'm producing something that can't be undone, unlike most of the other things I do every day which need to be done again tomorrow and the next day and the day after that...
