not quite winter...

It's getting cooler in the mornings and the new winter hats are already getting a bit of use.  This one loved his so much that he wore it to bed the first two (hot) nights.  It's been lovely to have my parents staying, and sad to see them go back to their shaky city again.  I hope the aftershocks stop for them soon!

m is for marshmallows

This morning I spotted what appeared to be a random assortment of stuff beside the front door... a couple of toys, a money box, some school art, a magnet. Turns out that it wasn't random at all, all things beginning with the letter M.  Our 5yr old had gone around the house yesterday collecting things up to take to school today.  He even tipped out his money box to show me the money he was taking for the M table. I persuaded him to leave it at home but perhaps take some play money instead.

Keeping with the M theme, after school we toasted marshmallows over the gas hob and made some muffins.  The muffins were a revelation because I used my new oven thermometer.  Oh my goodness what a difference it will make to my life!!!  I've often thought that our oven was too hot but really just had to guess by how much.  Turns out that instead of cooking things at 180 degrees, it's actually been at 240!  Crazy.  No wonder the boys are happy eating burnt stuff.

It's funny that his top teeth being loose are making a gap but not falling out.

walking to school

School spirit is alive and well at our place.  That is a role model sash he's wearing, he got it for "thinking and doing the right thing".  He was very excited as he was the first one in his class to get one (they give them out every fortnight).

The boys have been making lists of things they'd like to save their pocket money for.

It's funny that as an adult you'd never think to lie on the floor to write something.

anyone know what this is?

It's caterpillar season again.  Well at our house anyway.  The bug catcher is home to two wee guys today.  This one is the hairiest (and the fastest).  He and his friend (the wooly bear caterpillar) made a run for it when they were left unattended for a few minutes and we had a bit of a mad time searching the kitchen for them.  I really did not want to step on one of the wee buggers.

I'm love autumn, I think it's my favourite season.  I am quite partial to spring too, especially when the kids were little and we spent far too much time cooped up indoors during winter.  Summer has never been my cup of tea, I like to be able wear my jeans and boots and not have to worry constantly about the gaping hole in the ozone.  We have a lot of skin cancer in our family and so covering up is not optional.  This seasonal table has developed almost by accident over the past couple of weeks.  The boys kept bringing home acorns and needed a spot for them.  Then the pile of cicada skins arrived so they got their own wee plate.  When we were at the library I spotted a beautiful book of prints called "Seasons" and funnily enough there was an autumn page.

zeros to heroes

Today did not get off to a good start.  There was a lot of grumping, dawdling and mucking about when the boys were supposed to be getting ready for school and I didn't manage to keep my cool.  My cranky voice was raised more than once.  Those lovely morning charts did not save us.  Finally we made it out the door (about 30 minutes after we wanted to) and the walk/scoot to school was actually nice and not too frantic. I'm loving the transformational power of the walk to school and of this mornings assembly.

I went to assembly because big brother was getting a certificate but little brother got a surprise reward too.  At the end of the assembly he was chosen for the kid sitting best and paying attention.  He got to have "assembly bear" for his class for the week and as you can see in the photo, he was stoked. He is trying so hard at school and I suspect that's why the wheels come off at home sometimes, maybe because it's a safe place to fall.  I look at these photos and wonder how I could get mad at these beautiful boys.  I am going to have a wee rest now so I can be a nicer mummy after school, wish me luck.

silly bandits

Thanks NanaRobyn, the boys were so excited to get these from you this afternoon.  Made their day.

See our newly painted table in the background?  I'm loving it/them.

 Let the trading begin!

cafe love

He seems so grown up these days.  Something to do with being five and at school seems to agree with him.  I got to spend some sweet one on one time with him at the weekend while big brother was at a birthday party.  We feasted on brownie and muffin, played dominoes and read a book snuggled together in an old armchair, before scooting to the fruit shop on our way home.  It was lovely.

biker boys

For the past few weekends we've been taking the kids out with their bikes in an effort to get those training wheels off.  We have no yard or driveway at home for bike riding and so the boys don't get a lot of time on their wheels.  Little one has got the hang of it now and so we just have to keep trying with big brother.  Apparently the best technique seems to be to get one of those balance bikes or alternatively remove the pedals from a bike (the cheaper option) so that they learn to balance before trying to pedal.  Wish I'd known that a couple of years back!

I took them by myself yesterday (B's working weekends at the moment) and got pretty sweaty running up and down beside #1.  I didn't get photos of him riding for obvious reasons. It's all good fun and it won't be long before they're both riding circles around us.

life in the hood

On the way home from school today our streets were littered with cans and bottles from the nearby student orientation gig.  Turns out that there had been a stabbing, which explains the proliferation of cop cars and the helicopter circling overhead.  The boys are always into cleaning up our neighbourhood and so made the most of a discarded vodka cruiser box (we started with one).  A girl from up the road noticed that we'd run out of room in our box and so ran out to give us a plastic shopping bag.  Really we should keep some in the boys backpacks.  We picked up 30-40 cans and bottles on our short walk... pretty glad that it's not O week every week!

my new favourite guy

I got to cuddle this wee love in my sling today (knew there was a reason I'd held onto it after all the other baby gear was long gone).  No he's not mine but my cousin's darling boy.  I'd almost go back to professional photography if the babies were as perfect as this one!  Sorry Mum and Dad (x2) that I haven't been doing the daily updates I promised, not sure why it's so difficult!

can you help Christchurch?

On February 22 my hometown Christchurch, was devastated by a massive earthquake, hundreds of people have died and the city is a mess. On April 2nd I'm doing a fund raising walk with some other Aucklanders.

Everyone who I'd normally rely on to sponsor me lives in the ruined city :c so I need your help!

If you read and enjoy my blog please consider sponsoring us or joining us on the walk. All of the money goes to the Red Cross and you can pay securely online - easy for you overseas visitors too. If you live in NZ your donation is tax deductible and a receipt will be issued.

Thank you so much!

thursday - tv free

I just realised that the kids haven't watched any TV (or specifically DVDs as I'm such an anti advertising control freak) this week.  Kind of by accident really.  We've been busy with friends and sport and library and today a bit of letter writing.  The 6yr old was reluctant at first but ended up going off and finding the "rainy day box" (it was raining) and that kept them busy till dinner time.  We have letter paper printed from the awesome Playful Learning blog.

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

So beside his new/old desk I put a wee poster on the wall.  R's often asking me to remind him how to write certain letters so I printed out an ABC guide from the write start.  If you want some cool writing templates like doctors paper, door hangers, writing papers etc. click on the templates tab at the top.  Anyway rather than using it as I had intended, he thought he should trace around the letters on the wall.  I don't mind, at least he's interested!

Wow thanks to Playful Learning this is my most visited blog post ever!
If you're interested in writing stuff here are some more...

tuesday - neighbours

It's nice that they're still friends even now that she's at intermediate school.
