getting arty

The other weekend was the awesome Kids Art Festival at the Corban's Art Estate in Henderson.  Well worth a visit next year if you live in Auckland.  There were heaps of crafty activities (printmaking, collage, sculpture, weaving, painting, music, drum making, poi and flute making...), story times, an entertainment stage, African drum workshop and other fun stuff.  And yes, apart from the food, it was all free!   Big brother loved the spider web painting and the mobile library bus!  Little brother made a flute which we haven't managed to get any sound out of yet...

I thought today was the 1st of June, the first day of the photo challenge.

I popped the point and shoot on a tripod and figured out the self timer. This was my favourite... a day too early. Maybe I'll plan something for tomorrow, maybe not.

are you in?

If you want a bit of a challenge for June here's something fun to do... I'm not sure about the self portraits but I'll give anything a go once (or twice).   More info on WhitePeachPhoto, the general plan is to take one photo each day and blog it or put it on flickr.

cake... fail

He was so excited about the chocolate cake he made this afternoon.   I was instructed to tell DaddyB and his friends that it was a Masterchef cake made solely by him.  Unfortunately he was overly enthusiastic and in his rush to show off the cake he upended it on the floor.  Cake... fail.

made me cry...

Okay so generally I only post my photos here, not often videos and especially not other people's. I saw this on YouTube this morning and it really affected me. I don't think many people understand how hard it is living with a severe food allergy. It's constant and has changed us. Please watch it just so that maybe you can understand a little better how I feel every day.
Leave me a comment too, pretty please, it might cheer me up. x

learning to ride

Getting both boys riding their bikes is a (slow) work in progress.  Probably something that we should spend more time doing but life seems to get in the way.  When we do get out though we have a lot of fun.  It won't be long now I'm sure (fingers crossed).

switch off sunday

I don't imagine our family are alone in spending too much time online or in front of the TV.  We have a computer in our kitchen which is awesome and awful at the same time.  I usually have it on and check my email and blog reader several times a day, and it's so handy to look things up.

Anyway I'm quite aware that it's not good role modelling or parenting.  We don't let the boys use it except for Skyping the rellies, but they see us on it constantly.

Yesterday we switched it off for the day and it felt really good.  We spent the morning at the zoo and biking around Western Springs, had some quiet time after lunch before launching into a bit of baking and pasta making.

B and 2 made pasta using our old faithful cookbook (Jamie Oliver's The Naked Chef  - a wedding present) with 6 eggs and approx 500g of flour.  The recipe said five eggs but they were a little on the small side.

Into the mixer they went and soon we had some crumbly sticky dough.

Kneading was a shared job but mainly needed DaddyB's strength.  Then they rolled it through our (bargain) machine and put it through the cutters.  We had delicious fresh pasta for tea and there was heaps left which we hung over a string in the kitchen and it was dry by this morning.  So we've got home made pasta in the pantry now, so satisfying.

guess what we made today?

Yes our very own home made pasta!  I found this pasta machine for $15 at Kmart last week and thought it'd be fun to give it a go.  I have made pasta totally by hand before but it took so long!  That was before we got our kitchen-aid mixer so I made the dough and rolled it out by hand too.  Only the one time.  I have more pictures from today but blogging isn't high on my priority list at the moment so this will have to do.  Anyway B and R made the pasta (I just took the photos) and it was delicious.

Today was also our first "switch off Sunday" which meant no tv or computers on during the day.  I think it went very well.  We rode bikes, visited the zoo, played Cluedo, CandyLand, Magnetix,  BusStop, read books, napped, baked bread, chocolate chippies and made pasta!

yummy treats

Since Mum and Dad were in town this week we had several visits to the local cafes.  My fave is Cosset where everything is dairy free and delicious!  Actually you can get real cream and yoghurt I think, but of course we don't!

the new morning list

Following on from last years morning lists, I made a new one this morning.  I printed the words twice so each of them can have a side to tick off (I'll laminate it and they'll use a white board pen). There were a few changes needed to the one the boys have been using because they're both at school now and sun hats aren't essential in this weather!  I love autumn and have been enjoying the cooler but still sunny days.  Today though it's super wet in Auckland.  Don't think we'll be doing much outdoor after school!

mix up dress up day at school

These were taken after school.  For most of the day the big brother wore a pink hula skirt over his jeans and a pair of old sunglasses minus the glass.

who let's their kids wear white?

This would be the only new white tee in our house.
Worn one day to school and came home like this.
Yes it was a bleeding nose.
Thank goodness for stain removers!

more eco cred

Hey Mum I'm going to pick up that rubbish there...
Oh look I found a bag.  I can use it to pick up more rubbish.

There's some cans stuck in this tree here.

Pop in the the bin and we're all done.

Feels good huh?  Maybe you'd like to try it sometime?

We have been making an effort to pick up other people's rubbish.  To tidy up our neighbourhood and make it a prettier place to be.  It's a little way we can give back to the community, kind of community service I guess (intentional kindness and all of that).  Anyway this wee guy took it upon himself to do a bit of a solo clean up at the park.  Great job honey.  I remember big brother, aged four, suggesting a neighbourhood clean up too (blogged here).
