the amazing dinner - USA

Okay well the dinner wasn't amazing as such but it was related to something amazing... The Amazing Race!

With a new series of the Amazing Race just starting on TV2 this week we decided that we'd have a themed dinner and then watch the (recorded) programme together.  The boys were very excited.

Knowing that the race always begins in the USA we talked about what food is specifically American. The boys came up with hot dogs. We had them with fries and slaw (American?).  We bought ketchup and American mustard especially and some soda to drink.  Later we thought that we should have had cherry pie!

Everyone had to bring one interesting fact about America to share.

Did you know that there are three towns in the US called Santa Claus?
And that the average American drinks 600 sodas a year?

Our seven year old outdid us all by arriving at dinner with a whole page of questions for us to answer
...competitive much?

Next week our dinner is going to have an island theme as the teams have stopped in Bora Bora... any suggestions of food or beverages are welcome.

Does any one else out there watch the Amazing Race?

    1. We all chose two favourite teams (but are allowed to change them if they get eliminated). It's quite a nice family friendly show. As it's on Tuesday at 730 (bed time) we're recording it and watching it on a Saturday night.

  4. Love the amazing race. We choose teams too and can switch when they get eliminated. Love the idea of sharing facts about where they are. We'll have to start doing that too.

  5. Great idea the themed dinner! Love it!
If you're after a Polynesian dish for your next themed dinner, I've just posted a barbecue recipe from French Polynesia. It uses Soyu which is the traditional Polynesian sauce for sashimi. Whereever you'd go in Tahit, Moorea or Bore Bora they serve those beautiful sashimi with this sauce. Delicious and supereasy! - Let me know what you think if you try it! Cheers

    1. Oh yummy thanks. Don't think we'll be buying a snapper but it'd work well for chicken too I imagine. You should have let him try the eyes!!

    1. Good idea! One of my fave meals from childhood was Oakhill Potatoes. Do you remember that? Nana would make it for us on Sundays sometimes. I think the teams will be coming to NZ at some point.
